THE MOTOR
Go solo, go unsupported as nothing else comes close.
I'm a Finnish outdoor and adventure professional and I have specialized experience about solo expeditions. The special need of a solo expeditions are very much different to those normal multiperson expeditions.
To go alone, unsupported and unassisted requires strong character and the ability to survive depending only on your skills and personal abilities. Problem solving is a key element when going Solo and all obstacles must be negotiated with pure will-power and physical endurance. Eventhough of the extremely hard physical stress one must keep on pushing head-wind and try to keep inner motivation high.
The oncoming expedition requires both physical and mental training. Logs of the earlier expeditions give guidelines for the safest routes and you can also find good tips and pieces of advise from them. The route itself is very different from the Finnish Lapland. Probably the biggest problems will be in navigation and in loneliness.
In addition to hard physical preparation the cold acclimation is very importart. The physical and psychological stress of the long expedition gets multiplied by the extremely harsh weather and cold.
Also the food is a key factor in expeditions like this. Adequite energy intake makes it possible to continue moving day after day. Fat content of the food must be as high as possible as the hauling of the pulka is extremely hard work. Daily work involves 10 hour of skiing and man-hauling in one of the most hostile environments. Energy consumption cannot be covered by the daily energy intake so everyday body will lose calories.
The Daily energy consumption goes exceeds 5.000 Kcal which causes one of the main problems: the energy intake. In heavy labor a human body cannot function well with pure fat eventhough fat contains over two times more energy per gram than carbonhydrates or proteins. Food has to contain a balanced amount of carbonhydrates and proteins to ensure that fats get absorbed properly. Almost everyday energy expenditure exceeds the intake which has to be taken out of bodys own energy storages.
